January 2012

ID Intensive: Smallsword

In order to enrol on this course, students must have completed their basic stage combat certification with either the BASSC or BADC. Students can enrol on this course at the same time as either of the ID Intensive beginners courses and provided that they complete the beginners course, may follow on with this smallsword intensive.

Students may also enrol on the quarterstaff intensive course as the classes do not clash and the last day (Saturday 28th January) is examination day for both intensive courses.

Don't let the title of "small" fool you. The Small Sword of the eighteenth century is arguably the deadliest sword to appear in Europe and was to dominate the scene of personal defence until the evolution of the gun. Quick, deadly and the sword of gentleman, courtiers and kings the small sword is just as much a statement of class as it is of violent possibilities. Featured in plays such as "les Dangerous Liaisons", and films like "The Count of Monte Cristo" the ability to use one is a useful tool in the actor’s box.

Students will have the opportunity at the end of the course to certify with the BASSC in Smallsword.

ID Teacher Ronin Traynor is a certified teacher with the BASSC. He has directed numerous fights for film, 3D film, green screen, musicals, opera, stage plays, street theatre, physical theatre and motion capture.
Venue: Daniell House, Cranston Estate, London N1 5EH

ID Intensive: Quarterstaff

This is a six day course that will run on weekends: 8th, 14th, 15th, 21st, 22nd and 28th January.

In order to enrol on this course, students must have completed their basic stage combat certification with either the BASSC or BADC. Students can enrol on this course at the same time as either of the ID Intensive beginners courses and provided that they complete the beginners course, may follow on with this quarterstaff intensive.

Students may also enrol on the smallsword intensive course as the classes do not clash and the last day (Saturday 28th January) is examination day for both intensive courses.

Yes, the quarterstaff is a broom handle all grown up but don't underestimate this humble weapon. Used by such Hollywood legends as Kevin Costner (Robin Hood Prince of Thieves), Eddie Murphy (Coming To America) and Donatello (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), the staff is the weapon of choice when you want to stick it to them!

Readily available and cheap, the staff has been a favoured weapon for both western and eastern warriors for centuries. Famous fencing masters of old including George Silver and Joseph Swetnam all agreed that the staff was among the best, if not the very best, of all hand weapons.

There will be an opportunity at the end of the course to take the British Academy of Stage & Screen Combat Fight Performance Test.

ID Teacher Ronin Traynor is a certified teacher with the BASSC. He has directed numerous fights for film, 3D film, green screen, musicals, opera, stage plays, street theatre, physical theatre and motion capture. In 2010 Ronin went to China to train with the Shaolin monks learning eastern staff techniques.

October 2011

ID Warriors Unleashed: Musketeers

Coinciding with the release of the latest incarnation of ‘The Three Musketeers’ franchise, our ID Warriors Unleashed Autumn workshop will be exploring the styles and traits of the Musketeer character.

The Musketeer was epitomised by Alexandra Dumas' famous series of books. The French Musketeer was a junior unit of the royal household guard created in 1622 by King Louis XIII. They soon gained a reputation for boisterousness and fighting spirit because the only way for social and career advancement was excelling at their task as mounted light dragoons.

Weapons of choice for the musketeer included rapier and main gauche (dagger) flintlock musket, and wheellock pistol.

Students will learn the Musketeer’s sword fighting techniques as well as some unarmed brawling for both one-on-one and group fights.

The workshop will be suitable for all levels of experience.
Venue: Brady Arts and Community Centre, 192-196 Hanbury Street, London E1 5HU
March 2011

Bringing it home - domestic and street violence!

ID Teachers Ronin Traynor and Dan Styles have been working on a variety of film and stage productions in 2011 so far and have more to come. A lot of these productions have asked for nasty, gritty, and shocking fights; no flashy moves, no special weapons, no super-human abilities and no posing.

The course will consist of 4 classes, each giving you the skills to lead up to a gritty, climatic group fight.

Students will need to bring one prop for the found weapon workshop. This can be any item found in the home as long as it’s not actually sharp. Please wear trainers and suitable movement clothing.

Session 1: Get out of my pub!
Basic techniques for domestic and street violence; unarmed, grappling and found weapons.

Session 2: Bringing the fight home
Acting the fight in a domestic setting. Please note that some scenes may tackle sensitive issues. There will be options to tackle lighter subjects if you desire but other students will be re-enacting scenes which may be disturbing to watch. You have the choice not to perform your work in front of others or not observe other scenes.

Session 3: Not just a number
Understanding the psychology of the group fight through exercises and tactics - can you be the last one standing?

Session 4: Clash of the Titans
A mass group fight minus the CGI monsters.
